Ostensibly, Always By My Side: Life Lessons from Millie and All the Dogs I’ve Loved is about the kind of love that we can only find in one other type of creature. Only other dog owners understand what it is to really have a deep and meaningful and even spiritual bond with an animal.

You can’t let pride or shame or anger stand in the way of a forgiving gesture, and none of my dogs ever did. They were always really, really good about reaching out to me, and that taught me about reaching out to others as well.

One of the most difficult periods that Julee and I went through in our marriage was when her mother died. And really, you can only say so much to someone and realize that you’re not really making them feel better, but I used to watch Millie make Julee feel better in a way that I never could.

You know, I think the big reason why God sent the dogs He has sent to me is to help me understand His plan for my life. It’s a plan that I’m constantly questioning, that I don’t always believe in, but there’s something about a dog guiding me through that plan that makes me believe in God’s plan for me.
