The Many Ways We Can Pray

How do you define prayer?

The many ways we pray

People pray in a variety of ways, reaching out beyond themselves to give thanks, ask for help, weep for loved ones, seek God’s presence. No matter what we are praying for or how we pray, there is no wrong way to do so. It’s our personal conversation with God. Mother Teresa said, “Prayer is simply talking to God. He speaks to us, we listen. We speak to him, he listens. A two way process: speaking and listening.”

When we pray, it’s not only about telling God our needs but also our deepest yearnings and longing to connect with Him. The psalmist writes, “As a deer longs for flowing streams, so my soul longs for you, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God” (Psalm 42:1-2a).

The main purpose of prayer is not to gain the answers to all questions, eliminate the unknown or make life easier but to speak with God and become closer to Him. And through conversations, whether they are communicated with words or actions, we discover the many blessings of God: strength, grace, empowerment, peace, patience, healing, wisdom and much more.

Although we might feel helpless at times, we are not, because prayer gives us access to a greater power. How do you define prayer? What role does it take in your life? Please share with us.

Lord, thank you for the gift of prayer and its power in our lives.
