How military families can fight stress during holidays

“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” (Isaiah 41:10, NIV)

Military life and stress seem to go hand in hand. Loving someone in the military can prove to be challenging, any time of the year. But that stress seems to multiply during the holidays and family celebrations. Here are six swaps I’ve discovered that can derail stress when it crops up:

1) Swap Perfection for Joy
It’s important to remember that sometimes good enough really is good enough. Joy can sometimes be a choice. I can either dwell on being perfect or focus on the good things God has placed in my life.

2) Swap a Full Calendar for Exercise
I don’t know anyone whose calendar isn’t filled to overflowing. But living life without a margin to replenish is an invitation to disaster. I am not a fan of exercise. But I know it’s good for me. Keeping a daily schedule of exercise makes a huge difference in my mental and physical well-being. 

3)  Swap Independence for Help
This one’s tough for me. I’m the original do-it-myself gal, but I can’t do life completely alone. And when I ask for help, it gives others a chance to show their love and receive a blessing in return.

4)  Swap Struggle for Enjoyment
I always have a hard time enjoying myself when someone I love is in a difficult place. It feels selfish and wrong. Truthfully it’s not. Instead, when I take time for things I enjoy, it makes me a happier person—and that benefits everyone. 

5)  Swap Worn-Out Traditions for New Adventures
There is nothing more horizon-expanding than having a loved one in the military, especially when they are deployed. If, at home, your life has been bound by traditions and routines that no longer work for you, do something different. Learn a new language—even if it’s just military jargon. Visit unusual places, and experience life in a new way.

6)  Swap Resentment for Spending Time with God
Life doesn’t always go according to plan. We have to learn to make the best of where we are and quit wasting time on resentment. No matter what we’re facing, spending time with God will help. He promises that He’ll always be there, giving us what we need, when we need it.
