Snow (Angel) Day

I like winter best from inside–but the girls need help with their snow gear…

Angels on Earth editor-in-chief Colleen Hughes

I’m working at home today due to a winter storm in my Hudson Valley town.

The backyard scene is idyllic–from my study window, that is. Snow drapes over the bushes like a perfectly smooth fondant. Evergreens sway under the wintery white weight, their needles the foundation for thick feathery wings. Even the most spindly trees balance inches of snow on leafless branches. And so far the iced-over snow on the ground remains untouched. Snow angels wait to be unearthed!

Our cats went outside briefly, lured by the cardinals, which seem impervious to the cold. Princess and Luna stuck to the porch, though, happy noses in the air. While I waited at the door for their meows, I remembered that I’d “rescued” a mouse from Luna in the middle of the night and had to think twice to be sure it wasn’t a dream.

Nope, by nightlight I’d moved the squeaky little fellow back outdoors, hoping he’d find a warm spot underneath the house instead of inside it. I nudged him in the right direction and he scurried away. Surely my mousey is back in the heated basement by now!

I can’t blame him. I like winter best from inside too. But the girls need help with their snow gear. I’ll get the hot chocolate ready. Stay warm!
