It was while watching his flock of sheep that Moses stumbled upon an incredible sight—a bush that was on fire, but did not burn. Then came a voice that beckoned him closer and said, “I am God.” When Moses asked for his name, God simply replied: “I am who I am” (Exodus 3:6-14). Because God is God. But what does that mean? What makes God, God? Here are a few potential answers to this profound question.
“After all, God is God because he remembers.”
“One of the first things that comes to mind is the fact that God is unique. As He says in Isaiah 46:9, ‘there is none like me.’ He exists in three co-eternal and co-equal persons called the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. He creates, redeems, and gives grace. He knows all things, has power over all things, and is present everywhere at once. No one, and nothing in creation compares to Him.”
“Only God is a genuine Creator, who can create something from absolutely nothing.”
“He who does not love does not know God, for God is love.”
“We are finite beings, and God is infinitely greater than any thoughts we can contain about divine reality in our wondrous but tiny minds.”
“People change, fashions change, conditions and circumstances change, but God never changes. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever.”
“God is that infinite All of which man knows himself to be a finite part.”
“God is greater than all we can say, greater than all that we can know; and not merely does he transcend our language and our knowledge, but he is beyond the comprehension of every mind whatsoever, even of angelic minds, and beyond the being of every substance.”
“God is a verb, not a noun.”
“Who God is and what it is to be divine is something we have to learn where God has revealed Himself and His nature, the essence of the divine.”
“God is the Absolute Idea, a circle that returns upon itself, not a straight line projected indefinitely.”
