Someone Cares: Say What?

Chance meetings with young parents give her the chance to share the best gift her mother ever gave her.

An artists rendering of a blank notebook of the type that Roberta gives away

I was in a diner having a cup of coffee when I saw a small boy point to the women’s restroom and say, “See that place there? It’s for ladies. But girls can go there too.” I chuckled along with his family.

“Your little one is adorable,” I said to his parents. “Do you ever write down what he says?” They didn’t. I made a quick trip out to my car. In the trunk, I kept blank books from discount stores for such occasions. Handing one to the boy’s parents, I said, “Jot down his words in here, and give the book to him when he grows up. Your writing doesn’t have to be perfect—just get down what he says along with the date. He’ll outgrow games and toys, but this will last forever.”

I should know. My mother gave me a book filled with my little-girl sayings when I started college. I love looking back and seeing that I’ve always had a way with words. Thanks, Mom.
