Someone Cares: What I Like About Me

She learned that if you say positive things about yourself it will help make the world a brighter place.

“What three things do you like about yourself?” my husband, Kevin, asked me one night as we were getting ready for bed. I’d come across a blog post that said your thinking changes when you say positive things about yourself. I hesitated, then said, “I didn’t feel like teaching Sunday school after this hectic week, but I did it anyway and had fun after all.” That got the ball rolling.

At first we felt uncomfortable telling each other what we admired about ourselves. Didn’t the writer of Proverbs teach us to let others praise us? Yes, but Jesus also said to love others as we love ourselves. This type of cheerleading is like telling God you noticed when he helped you overcome a bad habit. Or thanking him for the gifts he put in you.

Sharing positive traits and accomplishments is now our nightly ritual. Not only has it helped Kevin and me see the good in ourselves, but it’s also helped build our appreciation for each other. Lately we’ve been asking our daughter and friends this question. Everyone needs to see themselves in a positive light. It helps us make the world a brighter place. I think it makes God smile too.
