Run Your Race in Community

Prayer group holding hands

Let us draw near to God with a sincere heart.... Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess.... And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another.—HEBREWS 10:22–25 NIV

God has marked out a journey of faith for each of us. He has also given us a community to help us along this journey. If you look at the verse above, it may seem that the section about “not giving up meeting together” only goes with the “encouraging one another” part. However, grammatically in the Greek, the first three phrases are all the benefit of “not giving up meeting together.”

When we remain in community with other believers, we draw near to God. We hold on faithfully to our hope. We spur each other on.

This section of Hebrews is closely related to Psalm 40:9–10, which talks about sharing with our community how God has saved us, how He has helped us, and how He loves us and is faithful. When we share with each other how God is working in our lives, we are encouraged on our journey. This kind of sharing deepens our faith in God and gives us hope. Take advantage of the community God has placed you in on your journey of faith.

Today's Prayer:

Dear God, sometimes it’s hard to make time for church and small groups in our busy schedules. Help us realize how vital other believers are in our journey of faith. Remind us to share with each other what You have been doing in our lives. Amen.
