Someone Cares: Bowls of Blessings

She found counting blessings to be a helpful practice, so when she found out her friend was battling cancer, she helped her keep track of her blessings.

An artist's rendering of Sherri's bowl of blessings

Three years ago I made a blessing bowl after seeing the idea in a magazine. Every night I wrote down a blessing I’d received earlier that day, and at the end of the year I read through the colorful strips of paper. It’s a great way to remember the gifts—big and small—in my life.

Then I found out my friend Vivian was battling cancer. When friends sent her get-well gifts like teddy bears, art supplies and her favorite snacks, Vivian shared her appreciation in Facebook posts. That’s just like what I put in my blessing bowl, I thought after she thanked someone for sending roses.

Why not make Vivian a blessing bowl of her own? I picked up a pretty bowl at the craft store and cut up slips of paper for her to record everything that helped her get through her cancer fight. I was so excited to send it, I rushed straight over to the post office.

Vivian posted a photo of her blessing bowl and her gratitude for the blessings in her life, including our friendship. The biggest blessing was yet to come—her doctor declared her cancer-free.
